The Energy Environment Plan addresses climate protection by means of a twofold strategy: the reduction of final energy consumption through the widespread deployment of energy efficiency measures; and the improved penetration of energy from renewable sources.

On March 4, 2013, the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol, Italy, transposed Directive 2010/31/EU into its legal framework through Deliberation No. 362. The directive concerns the energy performance of buildings and aims to reduce energy consumption and promote the use of renewable energies.

The Alpine region Alta Val di Non lies within the Autonomous Province of Trento. It covers around 100 km2 and is divided into 10 municipalities with a total population of 6,000 inhabitants. One characteristic of this mountain territory is the significant number of cattle (about 3,000 head).

Romania is among the few European countries that employ a green certificate (GC) system aimed at incentivising producers of renewable energy. The Romanian GC scheme was introduced in 2005 and underwent significant reforms between 2008 and 2011.
