Low Carbon South East Europe

European Academy Bolzano, Italy

The European Academy of Bozen/Bolzano (EURAC) was created in 1992 as an independent research centre and is home to researchers from all over Europe who work together on a wide range of interdisciplinary projects. The four areas of research are: autonomies; mountains; health; and technologies. These diverse branches of research share one thing in common: researchers from a range of scientific and geographical backgrounds cooperate in a flexible, interdisciplinary way in the pursuit of fundamental knowledge that is both relevant and sustainable. In addition to undertaking nationally and internationally commissioned research projects, EURAC’s 11 institutes manage numerous local and regional projects that serve as models for other European regions.

The Institute for Renewable Energy carries out applied research in the fields of solar energy and energy efficiency in buildings, smart cities and regions. Its activities include national and international research projects, as well as direct cooperation with industry and public partners. Industry-related projects normally involve the development of new products and the evaluation of technological solutions. Public-related projects are aimed at developing decision support systems for the elaboration of energy strategies and plans. Furthermore, EURAC offers support in the development of complex energy systems, such as net-zero energy buildings, integrated energy plans and CO2 reduction plans. It also supports the promotion of renewable energy technologies and assists political decision makers through scientific consultancy.

Research carried out by EURAC involves the extensive use of dynamic simulation tools and decision support systems. Scientific results are based on measurements from internal test facilities and on the evaluation of monitoring campaigns of solar energy systems, buildings and urban settlements.
